Stop Paying Your Bank to Hold Your Money

Most people think of bank fees as a fixed cost β€” the price of having a checking account. They are not. They are optional charges that a bank applies when you do not meet certain conditions, and at most institutions, those conditions are straightforward enough to meet without changing how you bank in any meaningful way. The problem is that almost no one reads the fee schedule, so the charge keeps coming every single month.

What These Fees Actually Cost

According to the 2026 MoneyRates survey, the average monthly maintenance fee on a non-interest checking account has hit a record high of $13.51 β€” or more than $162 per year. Bank of America's Advantage Plus checking charges $12 per month ($144 per year). Chase Total Checking charges $15 per month ($180 per year). Wells Fargo's Everyday Checking charges $10 per month ($120 per year). That is real money leaving your account every 30 days for the privilege of having the account.

The Three Ways to Eliminate the Fee

At most traditional banks, monthly maintenance fees can be waived one of three ways. The first and easiest: set up direct deposit. For Chase, a direct deposit of any amount from an employer or government benefit (such as Social Security) waives the $15 monthly fee completely. Bank of America waives its fee with $250 or more in monthly direct deposits. Wells Fargo waives its fee with $500 or more per month in qualifying deposits.

The second option: maintain a minimum daily balance. Most banks will waive the fee if your account balance stays above a certain floor β€” typically $1,500 to $5,000 depending on the institution and account type. The third option: switch account types. Many banks offer senior checking accounts or basic banking accounts with no maintenance fee for customers over a certain age or income level. Call your bank and ask specifically what fee-free options exist for your situation.

If none of those options work for your current bank, the cleanest solution is to switch. Capital One 360 Checking, Ally Bank, and Discover Cashback Debit all charge no monthly maintenance fee β€” ever β€” regardless of your balance or activity. Moving a checking account takes about 20 minutes online.

Over 10 years, a $13.51 monthly fee adds up to more than $1,600 paid to your bank for nothing. That money stays in your pocket the moment you make one phone call or fill out one online form.
