This is the kind of task that takes 30 seconds and gets delayed for years. According to the National Fire Protection Association, 60 percent of home fire deaths occur in homes where smoke alarms were either missing or present but not working. Working alarms reduce the risk of dying in a home fire by more than half. That gap — between having a detector and having one that actually functions — is what this task is about.

Why Detectors Fail Silently

A smoke detector can fail in two ways: dead or weak batteries, and age. The average smoke detector has a lifespan of 8 to 10 years — after that, the sensing chamber degrades and the device may not respond reliably to actual smoke, even if it still chirps or lights up when tested. According to a 2024 CPSC consumer survey, only 51 percent of U.S. households correctly identified the age of their smoke alarms. The rest were guessing.

Look at the back or inside panel of your smoke detector for a manufacture date. If it was made before 2016, replace it — regardless of whether it passes the button test. A 10-year-old detector that beeps when you press the button may still fail to detect slow-building smoke from a smoldering fire.

The One-at-a-Time Method

You do not have to test every detector today. Pick one — the nearest one to where you are right now. Press and hold the test button until you hear the alarm sound. If it is weak, delayed, or silent, replace the batteries first and test again. If replacing the batteries does not fix it, replace the unit. A basic smoke detector costs $10 to $25 at any hardware or home improvement store.

Put the next detector on your calendar for next week. Working through them one at a time — one per week, or one per room — is more realistic than trying to audit the whole house at once and is still far better than not checking at all.

One last thing worth noting: if any of your detectors are combination smoke and carbon monoxide units, the same aging rule applies. CO detectors have the same 8-to-10-year lifespan and the same silent-failure risk.
