A Credential Worth Earning.

A notary public is a state-commissioned official authorized to witness signatures, verify identities, and authenticate documents β€” the kind of function needed every time someone signs a real estate contract, a healthcare directive, a power of attorney, a business agreement, or a legal affidavit. Every one of those transactions requires a notary. The demand is steady, the certification is inexpensive to obtain, and the work fits naturally into a flexible part-time schedule.

How to Get Your Commission

Requirements vary by state, but the general process is the same: complete a short application through your state's notary regulating office, pay the application fee (typically $10 to $120), pass a background check, and in some states complete a short training course or exam. Most states process a notary commission within two to four weeks. California, which requires an exam and fingerprinting, takes six to twelve weeks total.

Once commissioned, you purchase a notary seal and journal β€” typically under $50 combined β€” and you are ready to accept appointments. List yourself on Google Business Profile as a mobile notary in your area, post on Nextdoor and neighborhood Facebook groups, and register on notary-finder platforms like NotaryCafe.com or Notary.net. Demand for mobile notaries in most areas significantly exceeds the available supply.
