Request One Comparison Quote

Most people buy home insurance once, set it to auto-renew, and never look at it again. The premium goes up a little each year — 3 to 4 percent is typical, and in recent years significantly more in certain states — and the increase just gets absorbed into the household budget without question. The problem is that a policy that was well-priced five or ten years ago may be meaningfully overpriced today, especially if your home has not had a major claim and you have not made changes that would raise your risk profile.

Why Seniors Are the Most Likely Group to Overpay

Research from Matic Insurance Services found that adults over 63 are the most susceptible demographic for home insurance overpayment. Premiums for younger homeowners tend to adjust more naturally over time because they move, refinance, and shop more frequently. Older homeowners who have been in the same house for many years often stay with the same insurer for decades — and by doing nothing, they absorb annual rate increases that compound significantly over time.

What Reviewing Actually Involves

An insurance review does not require switching carriers. It starts with pulling out your current declarations page — the summary page that lists your coverage amounts, deductibles, and annual premium — and calling one or two competing insurers for a quote on equivalent coverage. According to Matic's data, homeowners who went through a policy review process saved an average of $751 annually, primarily from identifying either better rates for the same coverage or coverage they were carrying unnecessarily.

Also ask whether any senior discounts or loyalty discounts apply to your current policy that you have not received. Several major carriers — including Allstate and Liberty Mutual — offer retirement-related discounts for homeowners over a certain age, which often go unasked and therefore unclaimed.
