Stop Paying Twice
Roadside assistance is one of those protections most people assume they have to pay for separately. But for a significant number of drivers, the coverage is already included β sometimes in two or three places at once β and they are paying for a standalone plan on top of it anyway.
Where It Is Likely Already Hiding
Your auto insurance policy may already include roadside coverage as an add-on or optional rider β typically for $6 to $36 per year. Many premium credit cards, including the Chase Sapphire Reserve and the American Express Platinum, include roadside dispatch as part of their benefits, covering towing, fuel delivery, and lockout service. If you drive a vehicle purchased within the last three to five years, the manufacturer's warranty almost certainly includes complimentary roadside assistance for that period. Some cell phone plans also include it β Verizon, for example, offers a roadside add-on through Signature Motor Club for $4.99 per month.
One important distinction: insurance-based roadside assistance is tied to your specific vehicle. AAA membership follows you personally β you are covered in any car you drive or ride in, which makes it more useful for people who borrow vehicles or travel frequently.
A Hidden Cost Worth Knowing
There is also a less-discussed risk with using your auto insurance for roadside calls. According to 2026 data from InsureMojo, two roadside claims in a single policy year can trigger a premium increase at renewal with some carriers. AAA and credit card roadside claims do not affect your insurance record at all β making them the safer option for drivers who want to preserve their clean claims history.
This week, pull out your auto insurance policy, your credit card benefits guide, and your vehicle owner's manual. Check each one for roadside terms. If you are already covered, cancel any standalone plan you are paying for separately. A tow truck costs $75 to $150 in 2026 if you call without coverage β but you should not need to pay a separate monthly or annual fee if you are already covered three different ways.
