Hang Up. Your Number Cannot Be Suspended.
The call or text arrives with urgency: your Social Security number has been suspended due to suspicious activity, linked to criminal conduct, or flagged by a federal agency. Unless you pay immediately — by wire transfer, gift card, or cryptocurrency — you will be arrested or lose your benefits permanently. Every element of this message is fabricated. Social Security numbers cannot be suspended, frozen, or canceled. This is confirmed directly by the SSA's Office of the Inspector General.

What Makes the Call Sound Convincing
Scammers purchase consumer data profiles that include partial Social Security numbers, home addresses, and family member names. When a caller opens with your correct name and street address, the natural reaction is to assume they must be legitimate. They also spoof caller ID to display the real SSA phone number (1-800-772-1213), cite fake case numbers and badge numbers, and in some cases send follow-up physical letters on convincing official-looking letterhead.
What to Do
Hang up immediately. Do not press 1, do not stay on the line to explain yourself, and do not call back any number the message provides. To verify your actual SSA account status, go directly to ssa.gov/myaccount by typing it in your browser — never click a link in a message. If you want to speak with someone, call the real SSA at 1-800-772-1213 using the number you dial yourself.
Report the scam to the SSA Office of Inspector General at oig.ssa.gov/report and to the FTC at ReportFraud.ftc.gov. If you already sent money or shared personal information, contact your bank immediately and call local law enforcement.
