Most electric and gas utility accounts now include an online usage dashboard showing daily — and in many cases hourly — energy consumption. Most people never look at it. That is a missed opportunity, because the dashboard is one of the earliest warning systems available for an appliance malfunction or unexplained energy drain that could significantly inflate your next bill before you ever notice it.

Many utility companies offer free home energy audits — either in-person or as an online self-assessment — that identify specific appliances responsible for above-average consumption. These are available at no cost simply by calling and asking.
How to Access It
Log into your utility account online — the same place you pay your bill. Look for a tab labeled "Usage," "My Energy," or "Energy Dashboard." Compare daily consumption over the last 30 days. Look for any single day significantly above the surrounding days, any weeks trending steadily upward, or overnight consumption that seems high for a sleeping household. Catching a malfunctioning appliance one month early can save $30 to $100 on a single billing cycle.
